The only organized contingent from New Zealand to the Spanish Civil War was of three nurses recruited by the New Zealand Spanish Medical Aid Committee (SMAC). The SMAC, the Communist Party, and a number of trade unions in New Zealand raised funds to send René Shadbolt, Isobel Dodds and Millicent Sharples to Spain.
