MIDST PUKEKAWA & RANGITOTO:
GOLD TAMATA (RHS)

John Berger’s "To a Wedding" brought me to an awareness of tamata in relation to the main characters' pleas for healing, love, and connection in the midst of crisis. "Tamata" are small metal votive offerings used in Eastern Orthodox Church as symbols of healing. They are often small, flat, and made of gold. The Community Centre is in what was the blind institute. Gannets appear in the composition because they go blind as a result of constant diving into the sea to catch food.
