Born into a Italian socialist family, Brigadier Ernesto Baratto fought for 2 years with the International Brigade. He returned to Australia, eventually traveling to New Zealand where he worked in the Runanga coal mine. He was arrested in 1940 as an enemy alien due to his Italian birth and imprisoned on Somes island. His 2 years fighting fascists in Spain were ignored.
